The Temple Lions Club Parks and Charities, Inc. was formed in the 1970's as a partnership with the City of Temple to assist with the development of Temple Lions Park and other parks in the city. At the time, Lion A. J. Mercer was the parks superintendent for the City of Temple. He also served as president of the Temple Lions Club in 19978-1979.
The initial project was the creation of Temple Lions Park and the construction of a swimming pool in the park. Approximately $160,000 was borried by the club from a consortium of local banks. A Lions pavilion was also constructed in the newly constructed park. Also created at this time was an agreement with the City of Temple. As a part of that agreement, the club received all revenue from the swimming pool and those funds were then reinvested in parks in the city.
In the 1980's the City took over the operation of Hardin Swim Center on the Temple High School campus. TLCP&CI contributed $125,000 to the renovation project for the swim center.
Recently (2006) funds have been donated by TLCP&CI to refurbish the playing fields at the A. J. Mercer softball complex in Lions Park, re-fence the softball fields, and pave and construct shade structures between the four softball fields in Lions Park. In the spring of 2006, the entity was expanded to include Temple Lions Club "Charities." This provides a vehicle through which tax deductible donations can be made to assist the support of Lions sharities and projects in the Cityof Temple and around the world.
